By now, you've probably heard about the many scams that utilize Artificial Intelligence (AI). It's not going away anytime soon, and regardless of the various opinions floating around, there is one group that is certainly benefiting from it: fraudsters. As the warmer weather continues, it's more important than ever to stay vigilant against these types of threats.

Common Scams

  • Voice Impersonation: AI technology has made phone scams more convincing than ever. Fraudsters will use AI to clone voices, making it sound like a trusted friend or family member is calling. These scams often involve urgent requests for money or personal information. Always verify the caller's identity through a separate communication channel before taking any action. Stay safe by learning more about it.
  • Phishing & Smishing: Phishing emails and text messages have become more sophisticated with the use of AI, making them more personalized and harder to detect. Scammers use AI to craft emails and text messages that mimic trusted contacts or reputable organizations, making them appear legitimate. These communications often contain links to fake websites designed to steal your credentials. Be cautious of unsolicited emails and text messages. Always verify the sender's authenticity before clicking on any links. Look out for suspicious links and verify the source before responding to any requests.
  • Deepfake (Videos): These technology-related scams allow bad actors to create realistic, but fake videos. These videos can impersonate trusted individuals by making requests that seem genuine. For example, a deepfake video might show a company executive asking employees to transfer funds. Always verify video requests through official channels to avoid falling victim to deepfake scams.
  • Romance Deceptions: Romance scams have been around for a long time, but AI has made them more common and often more realistic. Fraudsters will use AI to create realistic profiles, for example, and then ask for money or personal information under the guise of a romantic relationship. Be cautious of online relationships that seem perfect and avoid sharing personal information with strangers.
  • Employment Opportunities: Employment scams have also become more prevalent with the use of AI. Fraudsters create fake job listings on job boards and LinkedIn, targeting job seekers with enticing offers. These scams often involve requests for personal information or upfront fees. Always verify job offers through official company websites and be wary of any requests for money.

In addition, here are tips provided by our Fraud Team:

  • Stay Informed: Keep up-to-date with the latest scam trends and techniques. Knowledge is your first line of defense against fraud. Regularly read articles, attend webinars, and follow trusted sources on social media to stay informed about new and emerging scams.
  • Verify Requests: Always verify the identity of anyone requesting personal information or funds. Use trusted channels to confirm the legitimacy of the request. For example, if you receive a suspicious email or phone call, contact the organization directly using a phone number or email address from their official website. Never rely on contact information provided in suspicious communication.
  • Throw a Curve Ball: Ask unexpected questions to catch fraudsters off guard. For example, “What was the name of our first pet?” or “What was the color of the car we drove last summer?” These questions can help verify the identity of the requester. Fraudsters often rely on scripted responses, so asking something personal and unexpected can reveal their deception.
  • Monitor Your Accounts: Regularly check your account statements for any unauthorized transactions. Early detection can prevent further fraudulent activity. Set up alerts for your accounts to receive notifications of any unusual activity. Review your credit report periodically to ensure there are no unauthorized accounts or inquiries.
  • File a Report: If you notice any suspicious activity, report it immediately to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). Prompt reporting can help prevent further fraud and protect others. You can file a report online through the FTC's website or call their hotline for assistance. Additionally, consider reporting the incident to your local law enforcement agency and your state's consumer protection office.
  • Reach Out to Us: If you have any concerns or need assistance, don't hesitate to contact Advia. Our team is here to help you navigate any suspicious situations. Whether you need advice on a potential scam or assistance with securing your accounts, we are always available to support you.

By following these tips, you can safeguard your personal information and finances. Stay vigilant and proactive in protecting yourself against fraud. Remember, the more informed and vigilant you are, the better prepared you'll be to stop fraudsters in their tracks.
