In today’s digital world, Secure Access Codes (SACs) are a vital layer of protection used by businesses and financial institutions to verify your identity. But while these codes are designed to keep your accounts safe, fraudsters are constantly finding new ways to manipulate us through social engineering tactics. Here’s what you need to know to stay protected:

What is a Secure Access Code? Why is it important?

A Secure Access Code is a one-time code sent to you (usually via text, email, or phone call) when you attempt to log in from a new device or perform a sensitive transaction. It’s part of a security process called multi-factor authentication (MFA), which helps ensure that only you may access your account, even if someone else has your password, account number, or credit or debit card details.

Advia Credit Union and other financial institutions use secure access codes to:

  • Confirm your identity during a digital banking login or transaction
  • Prevent unauthorized access
  • Add an extra layer of defense against fraud

What to do when you receive a Secure Access Code?

If you have tried to log in to Advia Digital Banking, receiving a Secure Access Code is a normal expected procedure. Here’s what to do:

  • Enter the code promptly on the app or computer screen you’re using to log on.
  • Never share the code with anyone, even if they claim to be from Advia.
  • Verify the source: legitimate secure access codes will only be sent in response to you requesting one.

What if you receive a Secure Access Code you didn’t request?

This is a red flag. If you receive a secure access code or verification code out of the blue, it could mean someone is trying to access your account. Here’s how to respond:

  • Do not enter or share the code (not even with someone claiming to be from Advia).
  • Change your password immediately to secure your account.
  • Contact us to report the incident and confirm no unauthorized activity has occurred.

Fraudsters often pose as representatives from the company and try to trick you into giving up your secure access code or other personal information. Just remember: Advia Credit Union will never ask you to share a secure access code over the phone, via text, or email.
